Q: What is yoga?
A: Yoga in the west commonly refers to a set of physical exercises (called asanas) which re-align and re-energise your whole system. These improve posture, help with a whole host of physical and mental health issues, and build strength, (including core strength), flexibility and stamina. Yoga seems almost essential if you want to achieve deep states of relaxation, and is perhaps best-known for its effectiveness in combating stress.
Asana is only one of the eight "limbs" of yoga, the others are more concerned with mental and spiritual well-being than physical activity.
Q: How do I choose a style of yoga?
A: If you are brand new to yoga, you may want to take a 'beginners' or even a couple of 'private' classes to learn basic poses. Then decide if you are the kind of person who like physically demanding exercise, (in this case choose 'Astanga' or 'Dynamic Yoga'). Or, whether you prefer an all-round class, that sometimes focuses on strength, but is more even, and less challenging overall (choose 'Yoga For All', or 'Yin/Yang Fusion')
Even if you are already in great shape, take a few beginners classes to learn the poses and avoid the risk of injury. While there are many great yoga books and videos available, there is no substitute for learning directly from a good teacher who specializes in the style(s) of yoga you wish to practice.
Q: What kind of equipment do I need?
Clothes: Comfortable, breathable clothes are recommended for yoga. You probably want to wear a top that is a little bit form-fitting, since it can slide down in upside down poses. Any exercise pants or shorts will do.
Shoes: No shoes required.
Mats: Your yoga mat creates traction for your hands and feet so you don't slip. It also provides a bit of cushioning on a hard floor. We have mats for students to borrow. If you prefer to have your own, they can be purchased for as little as £5.
Optional Equipment: We have blankets, blocks and straps to borrow. Bring your own if you like.
